Matthew 20:17-28

Today is the fifth Sunday in Lent – our series during Lent is called A Sent People – we will consider Gospel stories that remind us that God is both a ‘sent’ God and a ‘sending’ God. The Latin word for sending is missio – theologians talk about the ‘missio dei’, the sending, or mission, of God. During Lent we will be invited to consider what it means for us to be the sent people of God. This morning we consider the story in Matthew’s Gospel when Jesus is approached by the mother of James and John with a request that they be given places of privilege in his kingdom. Jesus responds by speaking about what it means to a be a servant of God. It is a reminder that the character of the kingdom of God calls us to live differently, to see the world through new eyes.
